Under the prestigious UK national Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) Newman’s research has been recognised as internationally excellent. Developing research and internationalisation are key strategic objectives for the institution and as part of this strategy Newman has launched it's new Research Centre for Children, Young People and Families.

Newman University College is a company limited by guarantee and a registered charity. Its objects are the conduct of a Roman Catholic University College for the advancement of education, learning and research for the benefit of the public. The University College is self-governing and legally independent but regulated as a public body. Newman has an excellent record for the quality of its courses and consistently has one of the best graduate employment rates of UK colleges and universities. In recent years very positive inspection reports have been received from the QAA and OFSTED, including an 'outstanding' grade, the highest possible, for its latest inspection.
Reports frequently highlight the positive experience of students and individual attention offered by Newman’s staff.  It was also the UK's top ranked University College in The Guardian's University Guide 2009. The University College engages with the opportunities offered within the boundaries of England’s second largest city. It intends to continue to develop patterns of study that meet the requirements of mature students and those from minority ethnic and cultural groups. These strong links with the educational aspirations of the surrounding conurbation are substantiated by exchanges of staff at different levels between the community and the University College.
