As an early years practitioner in a Child and Family Centre, I have had many experiences of working with cultural diversity, equality issues and social inclusion. My skills and knowledge in these areas have developed over the 11 years of my career and continue to do so.
Working with, respecting and listening to parents, carers and their children, has played a major part in the development of my practice and professionalism, along with observing and learning from other colleagues and professionals. Specific training courses that have been made available, have allowed me to consolidate and build on my knowledge and skills. I believe a combination of a warm and empathic attitude, as well as opportunities for specific training, have allowed me to develop, promote and deliver a good standard of practice.
This document, based on the DECET and ISSA principles and missions has been compiled by a varied range of professionals from many different countries, cultural backgrounds and with differing levels of experience and knowledge. I believe this document will be a very good and useful tool and resource for practitioners.
This document will allow the reader to analyse and reflect on their own practice and will help support and give guidance on development of their own practice and professionalism.
The five competencies, along with reflecting examples from ECCE workers which are mentioned, will provide an opportunity for ECCE professionals to review, assess, reflect and develop their own personal practice and that of their establishment.
By reading this document I myself have been able to acknowledge and recognise areas of my practice and professionalism and as my training continues to grow and develop, I will definitely refer to this document for future support.
