Cildcare for Newcomers is an action-research project running from 2003 - 2006 in Brussels, in collaboration with the Vlaamse Gemeenschapscommissie.
After an initial exploratory research, a pilot project was set up to enhance the accessibility of mainstream day care centre (0 - 3 years) for children of newcomers. The action research focuses on several targets:
- Three pilot centres are selected, who reserve in total 15 places for children of newcomers
- The staff and the management of these centres receive regular staff development by the VBJK. Respect for diversity is the key issue here.
- Four newcomers are selected and trained as child care workers and work in these pilot centres to diversify the team
- A close collaboration is set up with the organisations delivering guidance and training for newly arriving immigrants
- A steering group is organised that looks at policy conclusions and dissemination issues
